Episode 123: James Cameron’s “Piranha II: The Spawning”

A discussion of James Cameron’s 1981 film, “Piranha II:The Spawning.” Plus Listener Feedback.
In 1981, a young James Cameron was brought on to be the special effects director for a small independent horror film but through different circumstances, Cameron ended up getting the director’s credit. “Piranha II: The Spawning” was a schlocky Italian horror film that had really nothing to do with the original “Piranha” film directed by Joe Dante. As much as Cameron would like to disown this film, “Piranha II: The Spawning” is the feature film debut for this genre defining director.
What made “Piranha II: The Spawning” a terrible film? Should James Cameron be justified with his feelings toward this film? And what happened during the film’s production that lead James Cameron to finish the film?
James Cameron’s “Piranha II: The Spawning” is the subject of episode 123 of the AuteurCast….
